What do you think about Gay Marriage?

Should it only be between a man and a woman?

Are we heading for Gay Marriage being legalised in Scotland/ UK?

Would you have any concerns about this becoming legal?

Let us know what you think

I am in support of gay marriages. The only obstacles we will have for this legislation are the Catholics. It really is an issue that is more sensitive for the church but I am hoping they will allow some sense to prevail

I really don't agree with the "gay marriage" it's not any different from a marriage. It doesnt have to be ' gay ' or otherwise. I, as you all know, am in a Civil Partnership, and feel like I'm in a lifetime contract. In a way, it's the same as a marriage, as both are the same. The only difference I can see is the actual word 'marriage' but then, maybe that's what others want, I'm not actually sure what everyone wants, but my take on it is, if you love someone with all of your heart, then does a piece of paper saying 'marriage' on it make it even more special what you both have? I think we need to get 'hitched' in order to visit our partners in hospital if they are ill , we also need it to take care of financial business if something dreadful happens, or even worse to take over power of attorney if the mind goes. I don't think it will come in my lifetime, although the SNP are making huge waves about it, but I can't help but think it's all about getting votes from an untapped community. The Catholic church will NEVER accept it, I know this as I am one of those and have been rejected by the whole church because of who I am, not what I have done. I am very selfish I suppose, as I am happier than I have ever been my entire life. I don't need that piece of paper. I have all I need right here by my side.

Equality should mean that everyone has the same opportunities in society. It should not matter if you are gay or straight. Marriage should be open to any couple. Civil partnership should be open to all couples. Then everyone has an equal opportunity to chose which, if any, kind of legal contract they enter into.

I always thought of marriage as the religious part of it although people do get married at registry offices now which in my book is really just a civil partnership. A number of religions will have an issue on gay marriage and therefore to me the question is should religions have the freedom to express their belief that gay marriages are wrong. I am against religions standing for anything that is illegal or harmful to people but for marriage in the eyes of their religion I think is up to them to decide. In the end they will change if their followers demand it.

I have found an interesting website which might explain from the pro gay marriage side why it's important for marriage and civil partnership equality.

The moderators on this message board understand that some LGBT young people have religious or moral objections/ concerns about same sex marriage. Therefore I will add a link for the perspective on how same sex marriage could be detrimental to society. There are many arguments for and against same sex marriage but we understand that people might need to see both sides of the debate before making their own minds up.

You can respond to the Scottish Government consultation on same sex marriage from this link

I believe it is important for everyone to have a chance to voice opinions on this subject although I would have an issue with a civil rights issue being open to a public vote. What do you think?
